Summer is BBQ season, and these are definitely our favorite homemade burgers. We first had them at my best friend's house years ago at a 4th of July party, and knew we had to have them in our lives for good! I don't recall the history of the recipe, but they are phenomenal and turn a simple hamburger into something special. There is also a sauce that we use with these that bumps them up even one more notch (if possible)!
Logan County Burgers
Serves 5
1 lb. ground beef
1 large egg, beaten
1/2 yellow onion, grated
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Gluten free hamburger buns, toasted (we prefer Udi's)
Grilled onions, pickles, American cheese slices, lettuce, tomato, and sauce (recipe below)
Combine first five ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Divide into 5 equal portions and shape into patties. Put patties on a sheet of foil and transfer to a hot grill. Let them cook until they are browning around the edges and will hold together to flip (about 3-4 minutes). Flip onto the grill and remove foil. Continue cooking and flipping until desired doneness. Top with cheese to melt. Grill buns; put sauce on both sides of the bun. Add hamburger patties and your favorite toppings.
Sauce for Burgers:
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup sweet relish
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
Combine all ingredients and serve with hamburgers.
Step-by-step tutorial:
Gather your ingredients. You will need a pound of ground beef, a yellow or sweet onion, an egg, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef and egg. Using a cheese grater, grate 1/2 of an onion into the bowl.
Add 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper.
Mix thoroughly, then divide into 5 equal portions. Shape into patties. Place the patties on a cookie sheet covered with foil.
Heat your grill, then transfer the sheet of foil with the patties onto the grill. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the edges start browning and the burgers are able to flip. This a is a great trick to getting your burgers onto the grill without falling apart. It also allows them to get some structural integrity before flipping because it won't stick. After they look ready to flip the first time, flip directly onto the grill. Continue cooking and flipping as needed to reach desired doneness.
Place patties on a foil lined plate and cover to keep warm and moist.
After resting a few minutes, top with cheese and put them under the broiler for just a minute or until the cheese is melted.
Toasting the hamburger buns is another great tip to a good burger. If you haven't tried it, you should!
Top the burger with desired toppings (grilled onions are a must for me!) and then spoon on the sauce. Similar to the sauce at In-and-Out Burger, it really makes this meal! It doesn't get much better than this.
